My First Visit to a Danish Comic Book Store!

Tucked away from the main shopping street in Aarhus, Denmark, down a little corridor of graffiti and ivy, is a small comic book shop bursting at the seams with comic book goodness -- Komics. I visited the store for the first time today to purchase bags, boards, and short boxes -- all of which I had to leave behind when I moved from the States a couple of months ago. Long story short, after much online research it became clear that purchasing the supplies from my semi-local comic book store would be more cost efficient than having them shipped. So this morning I hopped on a train and spent a nice afternoon chatting with owner, Kjeld about comics and what not! Here are a few pictures I snapped with my phone of the inside of Komics! Naturally, I forgot to take a picture of the outside sign... next time!

At some point in our conversation, the owner pulled out a copy of 1000 Comic Books You Must Read by Tony Isabella -- 1970s romance comic book editor and Sequential Crush reader! Small world, eh?!

So now, I can breathe a big sigh of relief that my comics now have bags and boards and boxes to live in! And if you ever find yourself in Denmark, be sure to visit Komics!!!

Learning from Romance Comics - Margrete Queen of Denmark, Norway and Sweden - "A Woman to Remember"

This two-page filler story from Secret Hearts #115 (October 1966) is quite fitting since I just moved to Denmark and only last week the country elected their first female Prime Minister.
Since I am not super up on my Scandinavian history (yet!), I'll let "A Woman to Remember" be your guide!

Hi everyone! It has been quite a while, hasn't it? I just wanted to do a quick post to let you all know that my move overseas went smoothly, and that I am settling in quite nicely here in Denmark! I really appreciate all the kind words and wishes that were sent my way -- I truly am so grateful to have you all in my life! I am still working on getting my little office set up, as well as acquiring a new scanner, but I should be back to posting regularly next week! Stay tuned!!!

Hello everyone! I hope you had a great weekend! As some of you probably already know, I am uprooting and moving from the United States to Denmark -- this month! While I am super excited, I am also naturally a bit stressed out! Making a move to another country is no easy feat! In light of my relocation, I have decided to go on a short hiatus from Sequential Crush. I will be back early September when my comics have arrived and a new scanner has been purchased! Until then, I hope you enjoy perusing through the archives of all the gems posted over the last few years and reading some of the other terrific blogs I have listed on my blogroll! I also encourage you to check in from time to time on my Twitter feed, as well as my new personal blog -- The Coziness Project which I will probably update a few times during the moving process. Once again, I cannot thank you -- my readers, enough for all of the encouragement, praise and love you have shown me and Sequential Crush over the past few years! I'll miss ya, but see you soon!!!

Cindy the Salesgirl - Too Mod for Her Own Good!

The adventures of Cindy the Salesgirl are some of the few multi-page non-serial story arcs with a recurring character in the romance comics of the '60s and '70s. If you aren't familiar with her, Cindy is a cute shop girl who has to deal with crazy customers on a regular basis -- hilarity frequently ensues. Today's episode from Falling in Love #104 (January 1969) penciled by Win Mortimer, has Cindy helping a customer named Sue who insists on finding an outfit that isn't "too mod."


You see, the guy Sue digs is a total square! Sue wants Cindy's help in picking something out to wear to the dance that her date wont find offensive.


Sue thinks all of Cindy's clothes are too far out and decides to look elsewhere. But when Sue shows up at the dance on Saturday night, her outfit is far more nutty and off the wall than anyone could have anticipated! POW indeed!

with a bit of storyline, don't ya think?

Now for a few things on a more personal note! As many of you probably already know, I have been anticipating a move overseas to Denmark for quite some time. My paperwork has finally gone through and I am leaving on August 21st! Whoooohoooo! I am super excited, but naturally a wee bit stressed out as well! Some of you have asked about the fate of Sequential Crush. No fear! Sequential Crush is here to stay!

I do have a lot of logistical things to sort out in a short time -- personally, as well as with figuring out how to physically move my massive romance comic book collection to another continent on a tight budget. So, I ask that you just bear with me! I am going to take all next week off to start packing and also, head to San Diego for the big comicon! I anticipate that my posts here on Sequential Crush will be less frequent until I am a bit more settled in my new home, but I will still try to post on a semi-regular basis! Ugly Duckling Week - "The Ugliest Girl in the World!"

Welcome to Ugly Duckling Week here at Sequential Crush! You are probably familiar with the Hans Christian Andersen folk tale, The Ugly Duckling (or Den grimme ælling in Danish) in which an ugly little duckling transforms into a beautiful swan. All this week, I will be featuring romance comic book versions of the classic tale! To start things off, I present "The Ugliest Girl in the World!" from Girls' Love Stories #147 (November 1969) with pencils by Win Mortimer and inks by Jack Abel. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!

Since childhood, Peggy Blake has dealt with being the mousy friend of beautiful Helene Johnson. Once boys entered the picture, Helene nabbed them all with her confidence and good looks.


Peggy's bountiful and impossible-to-get-rid-of freckles are the bane of her existence, and the primary cause of her low self-esteem.


Things start to look up for Peggy when Helene goes out of town for vacation and a cute boy named Brad Parker moves in across the street. At first, Peggy doubts Brad will have any interest in her -- but she is pleasantly surprised when he asks if she will show him around town.


The two hit it off and continue to see each other. Peggy's elation turns to fear when she convinces herself that Brad probably only likes her as a friend and would be more interested in Helene, were they to meet. Eventually, Helene and Brad do meet. Much to Peggy's surprise, Brad wants to keep seeing her... and her freckles!


Peggy briefly persuades herself that she has nothing to worry about -- until she sees Brad and Helene together on their way to her house. Peggy's confidence is smashed and she fears the worst.


After a long silence, Helene breaks the news to Peggy. But it isn't the news Peggy had been expecting! Brad doesn't want to break up with Peggy for Helene. Rather, Brad wants to know how he can win over Peggy! He thinks she is beautiful -- freckles and all!


Peggy's attempts at changing herself on the exterior clearly fail. It is the letting go of the disdain for herself and having enough confidence to accept Brad's affections that put her on the path to "Swandom!" Stay tuned all this week for more Ugly Duckling stories! Just prepare yourself -- there will be lots of freckles and glasses!!!
