Description

Her husband wants her back!

Marina thought her dreams had come true when her husband placed a wedding band on her finger. But their marriage was not the fairytale she'd hoped for, and eventually Marina walked away, her heart broken.

But two years on Pietro DInzeo no longer haunts Marina's dreams. She knows the time has come to move on, and even a summons to join him in Sicily won't deter her However, with his wife standing before him, about to sign on the dotted line of their divorce papers, Pietro wonders why he ever let her go?

Kate, is there a behind the book story for The Proud Wife?

A small part of the story of The Proud Wife comes from my own life. Before my son was born, I had another pregnancy, one that ended in miscarriage. My husband and I hadn’t been married very long at the time and we both dealt with the loss of the baby in very different ways. So when I was working through Pietro and Marina's reactions, I remembered those days and the complicated intense feelings that went with them. I also wanted to explore the theme that my web designer has put into the great banner for this book on my web site – that sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got until you’re about to lose it.

Are you a plotter or pantser? What is your writing routine?

I’m sort of half and half really! A plotster? I always start out with the ‘seed’ of a book – just an idea. Perhaps a line of dialogue or just a ‘what would happen if . . .’ Then I take it from there. Sometimes I plan out the scenes ahead- these are the times when the book has to develop a very definite way or when I know a scene that has to come in later. Other times I’ll just ‘ travel hopefully into the fog’ and see where the characters will take me. Because for me the characters are the most important – they are what make the story. It’s their story and I have to tell it for them. So I need to know my characters very well so that I can understand how they will behave and how they will react to what happens to them.

With The Prod Wife, I knew that my hero, Pietro, was going to push for a divorce - but that he would never reveal what his real reasons for doing so were. He thinks that his marriage is over and that the best thing to do is to end it cleanly and definitely so that he and Marina have a chance to move on. Marina thinks that this shows there is no chance for their future so she is resolved to accept nothing from him in the divorce settlement - and that is what makes them both stop and think.

This book is really very typical of how I work. I knew these details about my characters at the beginning, and I knew why their marriage had failed, what had driven them apart. But once they came together I was working more as a ‘pantser’ – seeing how they would react to each other and how they would then take that further. For me the really hard work in a book is the ‘thinking time’ before you are actually writing the story. That’s when you have to ask yourself (and your characters) a lot of questions and most of them begin with ‘Why?’ I try to work on my writing – or something connected with it every day. But I don’t really have a routine other than to make myself sit down at the desk and work. Sometimes the words flow and sometimes they don’t. On the really good days, I can work for hours – and still be at my desk at 10 at night. But I also need to make sure that I get a chance to unwind.

How did you start your career? Who was your first publisher?

If we’re talking about novels, then Harlequin Mills& Boon were my first publisher. I had my first novel published by them – The Chalk Line – in 1984. Before that I had had some short stories published in small magazines but nothing very much. I always wanted to write and even as a child I was writing stories

What are you working on right now?, always scribbling in notebooks. I wrote a long story in instalments that my friends read like a serial and that was very romantic so when I left work to have my son I looked back at the things I had enjoyed writing and realised that romance was the sort of novel writing I liked best. I also remembered a friend of my mother who had written for Mills & Boon when I was growing up so I decided to give it a try., My first attempt was rejected (not surprisingly, it was pretty bad!) but my second attempt got a response from a Senior Editor telling me what was wrong with what I’d submitted and asking me to try again. Of course I did and The Chalk Line was the result. They wanted some small revisions and that was my first acceptance.

What news would you like to share with your readers?

I’ve just had some really great new – fabulous news! One of my novels from last year – The Konstantos Marriage Demand - was shortlisted by Romantic Times for their Reviewers’ Choice Awards – for the Best Presents Extra and it was just announced in the new issue of Romantic Times that I had won! I was so thrilled. I’ve been nominated twice before for this award - with The Twelve Month Mistress and Bedded By The Greek Billionaire but this was my first win. And I’ve just learned that RT gave The Proud Wife 4 1/2 stars so they really seem to like what I’m writing right now.

How did you build the relationship between Marina and Pietro so that it felt real?

I always work the same way on building my characters - I have to get to know them really well. So I spend a lot of time thinking about who they are and what has happened to them in the past – then what happened between the two of them and the most important question ‘why’? I knew, obviously that they had been married but the marriage had broken down but I needed to know what had been the cause of that breakdown and how it had made them both feel. The problem for these two people was that they had married in a rush because Marina was pregnant, but they didn’t know each other well enough to survive the grief and pain when Marina lost the baby. They shared a powerful physical passion but they needed more than that to cope with what life threw at them. Grief does terrible things to people. Some couples can be drawn together by it, others are torn apart. And because Marina and Pietro didn’t know each other well enough to understand what each of them was going through that grief opened up the cracks in their marriage and they didn’t know how to communicate what they were feeling to each other. They still had the burning passion that had brought them together. But passion wasn’t enough to keep them together. In the end, Marina couldn’t take the emptiness any more and she left. And believing separation was what she truly wanted, Pietro let her go. I try to dig deep into my characters to understand what they are really feeling – and that’s not what they say they are feeling. So many times people put on masks’ to hide what they’re really feeling – I had to make them take those masks away.

Do you identify with the characters you write about?

Oh yes – I think you have to to be able to write them really well. I don’t just tell my characters’ stories, I try to get inside them, into their hearts and their minds. I want to feel the way they are feeling, understand their anger, love, pain - all the emotions that run through them. I may not have experienced everything they live through - or I might not do what they would do in a certain situation but I need to understand it and believe in it so that I can communicate it to my readers and get them to believe in my hero and heroine and the way they think and feel and act.

Tell us a little about your favorite “hero” type guy.

I love the way that Executive Editor Tessa Shapcott once described the powerful Alpha Male as the ultimate nurturer. I know a lot of people wouldn’t associate that word with some of the powerful Presents heroes, but what I love about the heroes I create is that they are really trying to do what they think is for the best. They may have got it all wrong through misinformation or something but they are aiming to do what seems right to them. I also have to show a pure thread of honour in a man before I can call him a hero – that goes with him trying to do what’s right. Sometimes this can make it seem as if he is too domineering or forceful but that’s because he feels things so strongly and thinks he knows what’s needed so he can’t see why everyone else – specially his heroine - isn’t doing the same. I can understand mistakes and getting things wrong but there needs to be that honour. Then when he acknowledges his mistakes it’s not a sudden transformation or ‘redemption’ - I would find it hard to believe that a man who needed redeeming would really know how to love. I love a hero who is strong – not just physically – dependable and isn’t afraid to acknowledge how much he cares. It might take him a while to say so because he doesn’t have the right emotional vocabulary to show his feelings easily but when he does say it, it’s well worth hearing!

Would you please describe the heroines you love to write?

I love to show a heroine with a quiet strength. They can look sweet and gentle but they are no pushover. I love to write a heroine who doesn’t just lock horns with a hero and challenge him – that might seem brave but in fact it’s like waving a red rag at a bull. The heroines I enjoy writing are those who are caught in situations they don’t like or understand but they are going to try and find a way out of it – or, at worst, to cope with it until they know how to handle it best. They use a very different approach to dealing with their hero – a feminine way – with patience and skill and understanding. They’re comfortable in their own skin, sure in their femininity, and they have a great inner strength as a result.

How would you describe your life in only 8 words?

Busy fulfilled loving happy creative challenging enjoyable – great!

What is your motto or maxim?

Life is not a dress rehearsal.

How would you describe perfect happiness?

Being with those I love and knowing they are happy and fulfilled.

What’s your greatest fear?

I have been married to my husband for 38 years in July – I’ve known him for 40 years. The inevitable fear that comes with loving someone so much for so long is the thought of ever parting from them

What advice would you give aspiring authors?

My first piece of advice is always to read, read, read. I’m always stunned by the number of people who tell me they want to write – whether romance or any other genre - and then they follow up that remark by saying ‘well, I’ve never read any, but . . .’ In Romance it is particularly important to read so that you get to know the line you’re aiming for, the sort of books they buy, the tone of the emotion, the sort of characters, plots and conflicts they want. Reading shows you what the editors are looking for much better than if they spent an hour listing what they want.

The other important advice for would-be romance writers is to write from the heart. What sells a romance is the emotion that goes into the story so you need to put yourself into the place of your characters, into their minds and hearts and feel what they’re feeling, care about the things they care about. A lot of would-be writers get too concerned about their plots when what they should be concentrating on is the characters. Getting to know your hero and heroine from the inside is what matters. If you truly understand them and know what drives them, then this will make writing so much easier because you know what they will do and how they will react in an situation.

Treat the genre with respect and don’t see it as silly books written by silly women for other silly women to read. The romance market is huge – huge numbers of reader, potentially huge numbers of sales. They love what they read – and they read if for enjoyment. And they can be highly critical of what they read. If you can love what you write and write it for enjoyment – your and theirs – you’ll have a chance of winning them to your books. Cynicism, or the fact that a book is just ‘dashed off’ or ‘churned’ out’ to make a fast buck shows and turns the readers away.

How did you come up with the idea of your 12 Point Writing Guide?

It all began with an Instant Message conversation. I was chatting with a friend .about writing and as I’d read some of her unpublished novels I’d asked if she’d ever thought of writing for Presents. This took the conversation on to The 10 Most Important Things about Writing for Presents. I don ‘t remember much detail about that discussion, but I do know that the top three of that Top Ten most important things were:

Characters

Emotion

And The Question Why?

Sometime later I was asked to do some writing workshops. I do some regular teaching here in the UK, at Writers’ Holidays and at festivals and of course the RNA Conference. This was an Internet workshop with a writing group based round eHarlequin. Now where had I put those Top Ten Most Important Things? After a quick hunt I found them again, realised that really, they weren’t just for writing Presents but, if looked at within the guidelines of each line, they applied to all romance writing. I also wanted to make the Top Ten the Top Twelve, and then I used those twelve points for the workshop, which was a great success. Suddenly I found that people were asking me for the details of the ‘twelve points’ – but I realised that just giving them the points without any explanation wasn’t exactly helpful. For example, how do you define the difference between sensuality and passion? Or what exactly is that ‘vital vulnerability?’ And don’t people get all conflicted about conflict? So I put some of the details – this was a very very shortened form of the workshop – into a pamphlet and had that printed to use when I was teaching.

It was that pamphlet that I showed to a publisher when he asked me if I’d write a ‘How To’ book on writing romance. It needed a lot of expansion and detail, but the basic skeleton of the book was there. Could I write the whole thing? At the time the publisher was known for his educational text books, they had a set format, lots of bullet points, were like revision aids and quite frankly they were rather dry. I wanted my book to be different. I wanted it to be as close to coming to one of my writing weekend workshops as it was possible to be. I wanted it to be like a conversation, as if I was – as I had been doing in the original IM conversation – chatting with the reader about writing. And most of all I wanted it to be a workbook.

That had been the important part of the original workshop. At the end of each session, I had given the students a set of questions relating to the topic we’d dealt with and then added ‘Something to Think About’ and ‘Something to Write About’. Because the best way to put something into practice is to write about it yourself. And in the workshops everyone had said how useful they found those sessions. So they went into the book too.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you choose to be?

I’m very happy right where I am – at home with my husband and cats and family nearby. But I love the beautiful city of Galway in Ireland - in fact I love Ireland because it’s the country my parents both came from.

What are your most overused words or phrases?

My son would tell you I say Yes too easily – agree to take on too much!

What do you regret most?

That my mother never actually held a copy of my first book in her hands – she was diagnosed with terminal cancer in the same month as I got my first acceptance and sadly she died before the book was published. But she knew it was coming out

If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?

I’d love to be able to draw – I have no artistic ability at all. And I’d love to be able to sing. If I do try to sing I clear rooms! And I love music and songs so it would be fabulous to be able to join in and not upset people!

What’s your fantasy profession?

I’m doing it already – I wanted to be a writer from my earliest days - (I always wanted to be an air hostess and a vet and a nurse!) So I’m doing just what I dreamed of doing. I did enjoy the work I finally ended up doing before this - I was a Children’s Librarian - but I love being a writer much more.

If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your days, what would it be?

Oh that’s a terrible question! As soon as I think of an answer, I want to change it. I love salads – does that count as one food or lots?

Do you have one sentence of advice for new writers?

Read lots to learn the sort of things that editors are looking for and understand the differences between the lines – and write from the heart.

(I’m being really good here and not saying as my one sentence ‘Buy the 12 Point Guide To Writing Romance’ – but that book does have the best advice I can think of in it.)

What comment do you hear most often from your readers?

That they love the emotion and tension I put into my stories. I’m a mean, cruel author who loves to make my readers cry and when they write and tell me that a book made them tear up at some point then I’m happy. Readers also say they love my ambiguous devasting heroes – that’s what I always hope they’ll feel so I’m happy with that!

Meet Kimberly Lang Author of Girl's Guide to Flirting with Danger

Kimberly Lang hid romance novels behind her textbooks in junior high, and even a master’s program in English couldn’t break the obsession with dashing heroes and Happily Ever After. A ballet dancer turned English teacher, Kimberly married an electrical engineer and turned her life into an ongoing episode of “When Dilbert Met Frasier.” She and her Darling Geek live in beautiful North Alabama with their one Amazing Child—who, unfortunately, shows an aptitude to sports.

Book Description:

Welcome Kimberly to Romance Author Buzz.

Hi Marilyn! Thanks for having me.

How long have you been writing and what was your call story?

I got serious about writing in late 2004.  (I’d been dithering about before that, saying I’d write a book “one day.”).  I submitted that manuscript in 2005 and sold in 2008. So that’s not too bad, I guess.

I’d submitted the full and got a three-page revision letter that pretty much sent me back almost to square one.   But they loved my voice (so they said) so I ripped that book apart and rewrote into something only vaguely recognizable from the original.

The day of my call (May 2, 2008), I was on my cell phone with Rhonda Nelson when the house phone rang.  I didn’t recognize the number, so I let the answering machine pick up downstairs.  I could hear there was a message being left, but not what it was, so I Googled the number and found out it was from Mills and Boon in London.  I ran downstairs – still on the phone with Rhonda – to listen to a message saying they’d call back.  It was the longest hour of my life.  All because I thought my “Call” might be from a telemarketer. ~sigh~

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer? Have you had other jobs along the way?

I have a Master’s degree in English, so I had a long and storied career in the food service industry.  I was a ballet dancer, a program coordinator for a non-profit organization, a conference organizer for NASA scientists, and I taught English to ungrateful Freshmen.  It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but I learned things at all the jobs that I use as a writer—and I didn’t even know I wanted to be a writer until I was in my mid-20s!

Do you plot your stories or let your characters lead you?

The characters lead the way.  Always.  It’s not the easiest way to write a book, because I never know what’s around the next corner; it could be something really cool, or a complete dead end. But I’m not a plotter. I can’t plot out a book to save my life, because I never know where the characters are going to go.

Of all of your characters, do you have a favorite you identify with and why?

There’s a piece of me in all my characters and there’s always something in them that I identify with. I can’t pick a favorite.  It would be wrong to try.  Their feelings might get hurt.

What are you currently working on?

I’m finishing up a trio of books featuring three brothers from a powerful political family.  My Marshall brothers are sexy and powerful, and they have heroines who turn their lives upside down. Look for them in 2012.

If Oprah invited you onto her show to talk about your book, what would the theme of the show be?

Whatever she wanted! I’ll make it work.  Hey, that English degree might come in handy… I’m good at analyzing literature any way you want me to.  Oprah, you tell me the theme, and I’ll make it work. ~grin~

Describe a day in the life of Kimberly Lang.

Up at for thirty minutes of meditation and thirty minutes of yoga.  I make a cup of tea, then go meet the Geek and the Amazing Child for breakfast and spend a little time with them before they head off for the day. I answer fan mail for half an hour, then loose myself in new manuscript before I go investigate that strange beeping sound…

I slap the snooze button again, but the Amazing Child is shouting that she has no socks, and she needs lunch money, so I have to pull myself out of bed anyway. We’ve all overslept, so I toss her a banana to hold her until lunch and find out she was supposed to bring two dozen cookies for the PTA bake sale today, and the garbage truck is coming and the bin’s not down at the curb…

Yeah, it’s kind of like every other suburban mom’s life, only I can sleep for a little longer in the morning because I get to wear sweatpants to work and showers are optional.

What is something you definitely want readers to know about you?

That I adore each and every one of them. Having someone appreciate what I write is a great honor that just tickles me to no end.

What are you currently reading?

I can’t tell you. J  I’m reading the books that came in my RITA judging package, and we’re sworn to secrecy about what we’re reading until the after the contest. But a couple of them have been really awesome…

Kimberly , thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview with me!

Meet Author Jennie Lucas

Jennie Lucas had a tragic beginning for any would-be writer: a very happy childhood. Her parents owned a bookstore, and she grew up surrounded by books, dreaming about faraway lands. Her mother read aloud to her in French when she was little; when she was ten, her father secretly paid her a dollar for every classic novel (Jane Eyre, War and Peace) that she read. As a chubby teenager, Jennie covered her bedroom with travel posters and always had her nose in a book.

At fifteen, she went to a Connecticut boarding school on scholarship. She took her first solo trip to Europe at sixteen, then put off college and traveled around the U.S., supporting herself with jobs as diverse as gas station cashier and newspaper advertising assistant.

At 22, she met the man who would be her husband. For the first time in her life, she wanted to stay in one place, as long as she could be with him. After their marriage, she graduated from Kent State University with a degree in English, and started writing books a year later.

Jennie was a finalist in the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart contest in 2003 and won the award in 2005. A fellow 2003 finalist, Australian author Trish Morey, read Jennie’s writing and told her that she should write for Harlequin Presents. It seemed like too big a dream, but Jennie took a deep breath and went for it. A year later, after seven years of writing and eight finished manuscripts, Jennie got the magical call from London that turned her into a published author.

Since then, life has been hectic, juggling a writing career, a sexy husband and two young children, but Jennie loves her crazy, chaotic life. Who needs a clean house? Every day, Jennie gets swept into drama, glamour and passion. Now if she can only figure out how to pack up her family and live in all the places she’s writing about!   Source:  Jennie's website

Jennie's latest release:

If anyone here present knows of a reason why this marriage may not lawfully take place, please declare it now...

Xerxes Novros is about to do more than just voice his reasons why Rose's marriage should be stopped... He's going to steal this beautiful wife-to-be and whisk her away to his private Greek island!

Now the kidnapped virgin bride has a choice... or does she? Xerxes certainly knows what he wants – he's determined to give Rose the wedding night she's been denied...

Meet Robyn Grady - Harlequin Presents & Silhouette Desire Author

Robyn Grady's Bio:

One Christmas long ago, Robyn received a book from her big sister and immediately fell in love with Cinderella. Sprinklings of magic, deepest wishes come true - she was hooked! Picture books with glass slippers later gave way to romance novels. When she was older, she wanted to write one.

However, in junior high, Robyn hit a stumbling block - a disheartening grade of one out of ten for a book review. Confused and hurt, she asked her hundred-and-thirty-year-old English teacher why the low mark? The wizened schoolmarm sniffed, "You obviously had a senior do it for you." Thankfully Robyn's business teacher was a honey.

Following a fifteen-year career behind the scenes in television, Robyn knew the time was right to pursue her dream of becoming a published author. Late in 2004, she received a phone call from a London editor. She'd submitted a manuscript to the Sweet line, which were featuring lighter, sexier stories to be released under the Tango banner. The editor was very interested in her story, but for a brand new line.

Robyn didn't stop smiling for a week, but sometime later learned her revised manuscript hadn't hit the mark. Then she received another call and another request for revisions to a second manuscript! That didn't sell either. On a third manuscript she received a very long, very detail email, asking for, what would turn out to be, a complete rewrite. Having torn out most of her hair, but with 13 contest finals in 2006 (including winning the Golden Pen and Where the Magic Begins), she finished the rewrite then contacted a New York agent. That wonderful agent took her on, and Robyn sold in a matter of weeks, first to Silhouette Desire, then Modern Heat (Sexy Sensation/Presents) with a two book deal! She is currently writing manuscript number seventeen.

Robyn lives with her own modern-day hero on Australia's Sunshine Coast with their three little princesses, as well as two poodles and a cat called Tinkie. She has majors in English literature and psychology, and loves new shoes, worn jeans, visits to the theatre and lunches at picturesque Moffat Beach with her writer friends.

Robyn Grady’s January release

The last woman Samuel Bishop expected to have in his arms was his ex-wife. Left with amnesia from an accident, Laura had no memory of their bitter divorce. In her mind, she and the business tycoon were still newlyweds. With her ready to pick up where she thought their scorching-hot marriage had left off, he couldn't turn her down.

But soon Bishop realized he was playing with fire. He wanted to reclaim the wedded bliss this Laura had shown him, but what would happen when her memory returned?

And what would happen if it didn't?

MEET ROBYN GRADY:

Robyn, welcome to Romance Author Buzz.  How long have you been writing and what was your call story?

Robyn:     I’ve been writing romance for thirteen years (wow!) and received interest from a wonderful Mills & Boon editor in 2004. Took me another couple of years, and numerous contest finals and wins, before a friend from New Zealand called one day to suggest I contact her agent. I belted out an email (as if a New York agent would be interested in me!) and received a response within minutes asking for partials. I signed with that agent and sold to New York’s Desire in December 2006 and London’s Modern Heat (then Extra) 6 weeks later. It was an amazing feeling! I feel very fortunate the way things worked out and appreciate every moment of ‘being published’.

What are you currently working on?

Robyn:   I’m finishing up a manuscript connected with this year’s Desire Texas Cattleman’s Club series. I was stoked to be invited to be part of a collection alongside fabulous authors like Brenda Jackson and Maureen Child. (I’m still pinching myself!) And then I’m onto a series of my very own, which will involve locations from all over the world and heaps of (dare I say it?) sex and scandal.

Of all of your characters, do you have a favorite you identify with and why?

Robyn:   I think it’s true to say that the characters you’re working with at the moment are your faves. It takes a while before you’re really in their head (or them in yours!) but then you have to identify and empathize deeply with them so that your readers will too. I must say I really love my couple from The Billionaire’s Fake Engagement. They both were strong, good-hearted people who had lost a lot and were willing to give up more to keep the love they had come to share.

What is the best thing about your job as an author? What is the hardest thing?

Robyn:   Everything! I’ve always, always loved books and writing i.e. playing with words, creating emotion through language. I wish I’d started down the publishing path years before I did. I’m grateful to be able to work my own hours and from home. Being there for family is a priority.

Describe a day in the life of Robyn Grady.

Robyn:   I sleep in as late as I can, make lunches and get the kids off to school. Three days a week I work out with a personal trainer. (I’d put on *heaps* of weight in less than a year and now I’m determined to keep healthy. I feel great after a good slog at the weights or treadmill! See how I’m talking myself into it??) During the day I do business stuff and also go over and edit what I’ve written the night before. I’ll usually grab an hour or two’s sleep then do the school run. Cooking dinner (ugh), homework. Around 10pm I come alive and slip into my writing zone. Maybe one day my weird internal clock will reset. But right now, I write best in the quiet of the night.

What is something you definitely want readers to know about you?

Robyn:   I’m a big believer in doing what you can while you can.

Scene you like most and would never cut.

Robyn:   I have a few scenes that live with me. Maybe the one I love best is the final scene from The Fake Billionaire’s Engagement. I can’t tell you what that scene entails and give the ending away! But I can almost guarantee a giant lump in your throat.

Thing your heroine would never be caught dead doing/saying:

Robyn:   What an interesting question! I thought hard about it, and I think it’s fair to say that each heroine and hero is so different. I interview my characters and ask them questions like this and they always tell me something different, even if at the seat of their fears are emotions with which we can all identify.

Scene in the book that moved you the most as you wrote it, or made you the most happy?

Robyn:   Maybe a scene from my first book, The Magnate Marriage Demand. The hero has married a woman pregnant with another man’s child. Without malice, he has decided that this child cannot occupy the same place in his heart that children of his own blood will hold. He is alone when he views a recording of the fetus he will soon call son. The emotions those images inspire within him, the impact of insight and understanding of self, was moving for me as well as for Armand DeLuca. That was one very happy ending.

Have you learned or found any bizarre facts while doing research?

Robyn:   Oh research! For my offering in the Presents Bad Blood collection, due out in NA in June, I researched Formula One inside out. My husband is a huge car racing fan. He drowned me in information regarding terminology and history and equipment – for which I was extremely grateful. He couldn’t quite understand why I didn’t want to know anymore about chicanes or Fangio once the book was finished. Having said that, for me, research is a really fun part of developing a story.

What is one thing in your history that has influenced your writing, whether it’s a character, your work habits, or your favorite plot conflict?

Robyn:   If I wasn’t a writer, I’d want to be a psychologist. I have a double major in psychology and am fascinated by the workings of people’s minds...why we do what we do. So whenever I write a character, I’m constantly analyzing her/him.

What’s next?

Robyn:   I’m itching to get into my Desire series!

Before I let you go is there anything I forgot to ask that you want the readers and fans to know?

Robyn:   Queensland, my home state in Australia, has recently suffered the worst natural disaster in its history. The rest of the east coast of Australia is also flooding. Lives have been lost and the reconstruction is monumental. Authors have put together an auction to raise funds to contribute to the flood relief appeal. Meet Harlequin and Mills and Boon Author Abby Green

Abby Green was born in London, but soon afterwards moved back to her mother's native Dublin. She grew up there, going to boarding school just outside the city.

I've been hooked on romance novels for as long as I can remember, and it all started one day in my grandmother's bedroom in the west of Ireland where I spent all my summer holidays. She had taken one of the distinctive rose emblemed books out of the library, and being a voracious reader, I devoured it in one sitting. It could have been a Penny Jordan, or a Sally Wentworth, I can't remember now. But what I can remember is being swept away into a story that was passionate and romantic and wanting more.

The fact that I am now writing for that company is a dream that still hasn't quite sunk in, although deadlines and readers figures are helping a little!

I've lived in Dublin all my life but was lucky enough to spend a lot of time in Kerry with my grandmother. Ireland is a vibrant, ever changing and growing country, and especially Dublin its capital.

I've been working pretty much since the day I left school in the film industry as an assistant director, getting in on the very lowest rung and working my way up. It's been a fascinating and engrossing career. It also gave me the opportunity to work abroad which was such a gift. But, the hours are long, the work is extremely hard and the situations can be very stressful. Not to mention the weather conditions, especially here in Ireland! I'd often thought of trying to write a Mills and Boon and when a friend lent me a guide to writing one, the idea just wouldn't go away.

Many years of procrastination later, I finally sat down and put pen to paper, or finger to keyboard. My first and second attempts were both rejected, albeit with encouragement, and at that stage I was determined so I didn't give up. I sold my first manuscript to Mills and Boon Modern Romance in March 2006, and have been living my dream since then.

I can honestly say to any aspiring author out there that it really is worth it to keep trying, the only difference between an unpublished author and a published author is persistence, I truly believe that.

Good luck to anyone out there trying to get published and just believe that you will.

SECRETS OF THE OASIS:

Shocking secrets of the sands!

When she gave herself to Sheikh Salman in Paris five years ago, Jamilah Moreau fantasized about wedding dresses and happy endings. But Salman was driven by desire, not diamond solitaires

Now, Sheikh of a desert kingdom, Salman can have anything he wants and, as Jamilah discovers when he spirits her off to a desert oasis, it’s still her! However, time has wrought changes, and their lovemaking is no longer enough

Something happened back in Paris that had everlasting consequences for both of them

Meet Abby Green:

Abby, welcome to Romance Author Buzz. Can you tell us about your latest release Secrets of the Oasis?

Abby: This is the second Sheikh book I’ve written. It’s a story about a woman who has always been in love with the hero ever since she was small when they forged an incredible bond, and it’s about what happens when they have an affair as adults. It’s about the repercussions of that affair.

Does this book have a behind the book story?

Abby: The behind the book story is that it was born out of my first Sheikh book, ‘Breaking the Sheikh’s Rules’. In that story I introduced this beautiful woman Jamilah and also the brother of my hero, and I wondered if they might have a story together. It led to a scene in that book where there is a hint of a past between them and then that grew into a story.

I also see that Breaking the Sheikh's Rules is coming to North America in May. Does this also have a Behind the Book story as this was your first book in the genre which appeared in Summer Sheikhs along with Alexandra Sellers and Marguerite Kaye.

Product Description:

When Sheikh Nadim buys the O'Sullivan stables, Irish virgin Iseult is plunged into a life of glorious sensuality and luxury - for as long as she can obey Nadim's one cast-iron rule: don't fall in love with me...

Abby: I hadn’t set out to write a Sheikh book, I’d always been a bit daunted at the prospect of trying to create that world when so many authors had done such good jobs! But my editor asked if I’d be part of a Sheikh anthology so I gave it a go. I’d always had an idea of a Sheikh coming to Ireland to buy a horse or a stud farm so the idea for the story grew from there. Ireland has a world famous tradition of breeding and racing renowned thoroughbreds and the Aga Khan among others has a stables in here, so it was nice to be able to use that aspect.

Of all of your characters, do you have a favorite you identify with and why?

Abby: I don’t really identify with my characters as such, or perhaps I identify with aspects of all of them – their insecurities and vulnerabilities!

What is the best thing about your job as an author? What is the hardest thing?

Abby: The best thing about being an author is being able to work from home and disappearing into a fantasy world.

The worst thing is working from home and trying to be disciplined when it would be so easy to surf the net, or watch TV or go back to bed!

Describe a day in the life of Abby Green.

Abby: I would get up around 8am, have breakfast and get down to work. At lunchtime I would go for a walk, come back and have lunch. Then work again until about 5pm or 6pm.

Scene in Secrets of the Oasis you like most and would never cut?

Abby: My favourite scene is the one at the very start when Jamilah and Salman are at their parents double funeral and he comes over to her to offer comfort, and tells her to be strong. The inspiration for that was from the film Braveheart when Muireann has a similar moment with Wallace when they’re children. And I also love the scene where Jamilah meets Salman when he returns to the castle in Merkazad to take over. She does something to Salman that I particularly enjoyed writing!

Thing your heroine would never be caught dead doing/saying:

Abby: I love money!

Scene in the book that moved you the most as you wrote it, or made you the most happy?

Abby: The last scene when they get together…I’m a sucker for happy endings.

Have you learned or found any bizarre facts while doing research?

Abby: Not that I can think of – I must be doing boring research!

What is one thing in your history that has influenced your writing, whether it’s a character, your work habits, or your favorite plot conflict?

Abby: Definitely the Mills and Boons I devoured as a teenager, they set the template in my head for these stories.

What’s next?

Abby: The next story is about an Emir who was betrayed by the only woman he ever loved and what happens when he meets her again years later.

Before I let you go is there anything I forgot to ask that you want the readers and fans to know?

Abby: I just want them to know that they are such a huge boon and support, especially when writing is challenging and you feel like you’re getting nowhere! So thank you!

In honor of Abby’s first sheikh release, I’m giving away a $10.00 Amazon card. To win, stop over to Abby’s Facebook page and comment on this interview. Come back and post a comment and your email address. Winner will be announced January 24th.

Sabbatini Brothers Trilogy - Melanie Milburne

This was posted this am on  Tote Bags 'n' Blogs.. I absolutely cannot wait for this triology!

I am pleased to introduce you to the first two books of my first ever trilogy for Harlequin Mills and Boon Presents: The Italian Sabbatini Brothers.

Book One is Scandal: Unclaimed Love Child
Book Two is: Shock: One Night Heir
Book Three is: The Wedding Charade

I am eagerly awaiting the cover for Book Three but I adore the first two new look ones from the UK.

Writing a trilogy was a wonderful experience as it gave me the opportunity to link characters between books, delve a little deeper into family issues and get to know the differences in the relationship between each of the brothers. Exploring family dynamics is a useful tool for writers. We often don’t have to look very far outside our own family to find rich sources of material!

The things I wanted to explore in the Sabbatini brothers’ family was how each strong, ruthless and powerful man approached the issue of love, commitment and being true to themselves.

In Scandal: Unclaimed Love Child Luca (the middle brother) is a man who has conquered a huge personal issue in private, only to find that the young woman he cast from his life two years ago in order to deal with that issue is now the mother of his little daughter. He has a hard task ahead of him in order to win Bronte back given how cruelly he broke off their relationship. The poignancy of Luca and Bronte’s story is that he was only trying to protect her by ending their relationship. He thought he was doing the right thing but it backfired horribly. I think that is something we can all relate to. Decisions we wished we could remake. If only!

In Book Two- Shock: One Night Heir Giorgio and Maya have a quite different battle on their hands. Whilst in the throes of a difficult separation leading to an imminent divorce they have a passionate encounter on the night of Luca and Bronte’s wedding. Fireworks truly fly! But the biggest surprise of all is that after years of trying to conceive a baby that stolen night of passion has produced a potential heir. Can Maya carry this baby to full term and give Giorgio what he most wants? Again the poignancy of this story is Maya left the marriage because she felt such a failure. She could not provide the heir the blue-blooded family (and Giorgio) wanted so much. Again, like Luca, she thought she was doing the right thing.

And then we come to the third brother Nicoli and his feisty heroine Jade Sommerville in The Wedding Charade. I would have to say that this book was one of the most enjoyable books I have written so far. I had such a strong sense of who both Nic and Jade were as they had cameo appearances in Book One and Two. Nic was determined not to be a pawn in his late grandfather’s machinations, tying him to wild child Jade Sommerville for a year in order to inherit his share of his grandfather’s estate. Jade is equally determined to get Nic to marry her. She is harbouring a shameful secret she is desperate to keep out of the press, and marrying Nic is the only way she can achieve this now her father has cut off her allowance. It’s not just fireworks in this relationship but thunder and lightning as well!
I hope you enjoy the Sabbatini Brothers Trilogy

Meet Lynn Raye Harris and Kimberly Lang - Harlequin Presents Authors

Kimberly and Lynn Raye talk about Harlequin Presents on UTube

Meet Kimberly

Kimberly Lang hid romance novels behind her textbooks in junior high, and even a master’s program in English couldn’t break the obsession with dashing heroes and Happily Ever After. A ballet dancer turned English teacher, Kimberly married an electrical engineer and turned her life into an ongoing episode of “When Dilbert Met Frasier.” She and her Darling Geek live in beautiful North Alabama with their one Amazing Child—who, unfortunately, shows an aptitude to sports.

Kimberly is a founding member of The Writing Playground, a website for aspiring authors, and she blogs with her Playfriends there every Tuesday.

Meet Lynn

Lynn Raye Harris read her first Harlequin Mills & Boon romance when her grandmother carted home a box from a yard sale. She didn’t know she wanted to be a writer then, but she definitely knew she wanted to marry a sheikh or a prince and live the glamorous life she read about in the pages. Instead, she married a military man and moved around the world. She’s been inside the Kremlin, hiked up a Korean mountain, floated on a gondola in Venice and stood inside volcanoes at opposite ends of the world.

These days Lynn lives in Alabama with her handsome husband and two crazy cats. When she’s not writing, she loves to read, shop for antiques, cook gourmet meals and try new wines. She is also an avowed shoeaholic and thinks there’s nothing better than a new pair of high heels.

Lynn was a finalist in the 2008 Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart® contest, and she is the winner of the Harlequin Presents Instant Seduction contest. She loves a hot hero, a heroine with attitude and a happy ending. Writing passionate stories for Harlequin is a dream come true.

About the Author, Lynne Graham

My first book was published in 1987. Today I am the bestselling Mills and Boon Presents author with sales of fifteen and a half million books worldwide.

I'm Irish. I'm a Leo born July 30. I learnt to read at the age of 3, haven't stopped since then. I hated school, enjoyed university. I first met my husband when I was 14 but we had a rocky path to the altar. I wrote my first romance at 15 but couldn't find a buyer! I have five children, one natural, four adopted from Sri Lanka and Guatemala. I live in the country and have five acres of wild woodland garden.

My favourite colour is green. I'm addicted to kids, books, chocolate, baths in candlelight, log fires and four poster beds. I love exploring historic houses, castles and beautiful gardens. I collect everything from rare trees to rock specimens and old toys. I'm interested in international adoption and post-adoption/ multi-cultural issues.

I am crazy about Christmas. I love being a writer when the book is going well, hate it like poison when it's not. I read a newspaper every day. I listen to dance music in the car. I don't like romantic movies with unhappy endings.

Where do I get my ideas? An active imagination and my own life experience. I have to confess that I'm still waiting on a billionaire to whisk me away on his private jet but that doesn't stop me dreaming! I had an imaginary friend as a child and adored fairy tales. I also have a keen interest in what makes people tick and believe that the good and bad times of even the most ordinary life give a writer the fuel to portray realistic emotions.

Meet Author Maisey Yates - Mills and Boon and Harlequin Presents Debut Author

Maisey Yates Bio:

I always knew that I wanted to be a writer, even when I had no idea what I wanted to write! From the moment I first learned how to form words with a pen I was writing stories.

Even when I wasn’t writing seriously, I was harassing my friends and relatives with nonsensical email stories starring them and various characters from Lord of the Rings.

I was distracted from writing for a while between college and meeting the man of my dreams, my own personal tall dark handsome hero, and getting married and starting our family. Then, when I was pregnant with our second child I picked up my first romance novel. But it was when I found my first Harlequin Presents at a thrift store that I really fell in love with the genre. And that was when I knew what I wanted to write.

Nearly two years after writing and submitting my first ever full manuscript I got The Call from Harlequin Mills and Boon. I am truly happy to say that I am now a Harlequin Presents author!

I live in the wilds of Southern Oregon with my gorgeous, diaper-changing husband, our two little boys, our baby girl, and our anti-social cat.

Daring proposal.....

When Elaine gives her business presentation to Marco De Luca she thinks she can be cool, calm and collected. She's wrong! The fierce tycoon can see straight through her shapeless suits and scraped-back hair to get right under her skin...

Ruthless awakening!

She may have proposed marriage as the perfect business arrangement, but suddenly Elaine's not quite so confident. Marco's made it clear that he's no modern man- if he takes a wife, he wants a ravishing beauty by his side, obedient and willing, day...and night!

INTERVIEW:

I would like to welcome To Romance Author Buzz, debut author Maisey Yates who writes for Mills and Boon Modern and Harlequin Presents. His Virgin Acquisition will be released in the UK in August 2010 and North America October 2010.

Maisey: Hi, Marilyn! Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to me!

Tell us about your Call story.

Maisey: I had gotten up early and was barely conscious when I decided to check my email. I had a message from my editor, asking if today would be a good time for her to call me and talk about my manuscript, and if I could send her my phone number. So with very shaky fingers I emailed her back and said ‘Yes, please!’ and at 8 am on December 1st, I got offered my very first contract! There was much jumping up and down, which was quite a feat since I was eight months pregnant at the time. (my editor was only thankful she hadn’t put me into labor!)

What is your writing style like?

Maisey: I think I have a more informal writing style. I like dialogue and I love a little banter between characters. I like humor. I think life, and love, always need a little humor.

Do you plot your stories or let your characters lead you?

Maisey: I’m this weird plotter/pantser sort of writer. I like to have certain things plotted, especially the central conflict of the characters, but sometimes as I’m writing they take me somewhere I didn’t think we were going. And that’s always fine with me!

Describe a day in the life of Maisey Yates.

Maisey: Oh my…busy! My oldest son is nearly four, then I have a two year old boy and a two month old baby girl. I try to start early so that I can check my email and get all the business that happened overnight taken care of. (I’m working with the UK office and those time differences make it interesting!)

Then the kids get up and things get pretty crazy from there.

After my husband gets home I turn off the Internet so I don’t get distracted and settle into some writing time. Then one of us makes dinner, maybe, and we all spend the evening together. After that I usually try to squeeze in more writing before bed.

And sometimes even the dishes get done!

What are you currently working on?

Maisey: Right now I’m doing revisions for my third book, which features forbidden love and a very sexy sheikh, and a princess trying to escape her arranged marriage. I’m absolutely loving it. I also have a new project in the works that I’m pretty excited about.

What suggestions would you have for beginning writers as far as "breaking into the business”?

Maisey: Write. Write and submit. Writing is as much about discipline as it is about talent. I write every day, even when I’m not ‘feeling’ it. If you want to be in the writing business, then you want writing to be your job, which means treating it like a job. A job you love, the best job in the world, but still a job.

Be willing to make the changes the editors ask for and try to find some objectivity when looking at your own work. Remember that editors want to get the best out of you!

Who is your favorite author?

Maisey: Oh my! That’s really hard. There are so many authors that I like. Miranda Lee introduced me to Presents, and my first ever category romance was a Silhouette Desire written by Heidi Betts. I still love their books! They were the ones that got me hooked on romance! Sarah Morgan is always a must read for me. Lisa Hendrix, Sarah Mayberry, Lynne Graham, India Grey, Penny Jordan, Trish Wylie…(see, I could go on!)

What are you reading?

Maisey:I'm reading The Billionaire's Blackmailed Bride by Jacqueline Baird at the moment

What is the best part for you of being an author?

Maisey: Writing is what I love to do, and the books I love reading most are Presents. So to have that as a job is just mind blowing to me. I’m still in shock, I think.

When using a locale in your books which you’ve never visited, how much research to you do?

Maisey: Well, this is a pretty big thing for me, because I haven’t really been to a ‘Presents locale’. I like to research enough that I have a sense of where I am, I don’t like writing blind, which is where Google Earth really comes in handy. But I don’t want to sound like a Guide To Hawaii, so I try to keep the trivia facts to a minimum. One big thing I like to know is how places smell. Weird, I guess, but I like to incorporate more than just sight into building a scene.

Tell us something about yourself that we might not know

Maisey: My husband, who is tall, dark and handsome (though unfortunately not a billionaire!) was my boss. So Presents.

Maisey, thanks so much for spending time at Romance Author Buzz and giving us a chance to get to know you!

Maisey: Thanks so much having me! I had a lot of fun. But then, I liked talking almost as much as I like writing…
Happy Reading, everyone!

In honor of Maisey's first published book, Romance Author Buzz will giveaway a $10.00 Amazon gift card. This contest is International. Please don't forget to leave your email address.
