Author Interview with Susan Mallery (Enter the Only Mine...All Mine Contest)
I am so excited to share with you guys this cool interview I did with an author loved by so many! I am new to her works, but I can't wait to dig in and find out more. Her Fool's Gold series chronicles the love lives of the those woman who brave the sparse population of men in the Fool's Gold area.
ALSO, congratulations are in order since ONLY MINE has reached #12 on the New York Times Bestsellers List in only its SECOND week of release!
ALSO, congratulations are in order since ONLY MINE has reached #12 on the New York Times Bestsellers List in only its SECOND week of release!
Please enjoy my chat with the stellar, Susan Mallery:
"New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery has entertained millions of readers with her witty and emotional stories about women and the relationships that move them. Publisher’s Weekly calls Susan’s prose “luscious and provocative,” and Booklist says, “Novels don’t get much better than Mallery’s expert blend of emotional nuance, humor and superb storytelling.” While Susan appreciates the critical praise, she is most honored by the enthusiastic readers who write to tell her that her books made them laugh, made them cry, and made the world a happier place to live. Susan lives in Seattle with her husband and her tiny but intrepid toy poodle. She’s there for the coffee, not the weather."Source
About the Book:
Her town’s lack of men may make headlines, but it isn’t news to Dakota Hendrix. The beautiful blonde has bigger problems to deal with, such as overseeing the romance reality competition filming in Fool’s Gold. Screening eligible bachelors is a difficult enough task, but Dakota hits an unexpected snag when a sexy stranger comes to town. Finn Anderssen will do anything to keep his twin brothers—the perfect contestants—off the show. Despite Dakota’s better judgment, she finds herself drawn to the mysterious outsider. Like her, Finn knows about heartbreak and how a family can fall apart, so she doesn’t dare to hope for anything more than a fling. After all, even in the Land of Happy Endings, finding true love is never as easy as it looks on TV.
The Interview
SM: I can’t wait for readers to return to Fool’s Gold! I love this town where the men are in short supply and the women are crabby… two facts that are not completely unrelated.
As for the characters, I adore Dakota and Finn. Dakota is smart, funny, and ambitious but still very family-oriented. She worked her tail off to get her doctorate as a child psychologist by a very young age, then returned to her hometown of Fool’s Gold to be near her family. She can’t imagine ever wanting to live somewhere else.
Meanwhile, Finn is a pilot from Alaska. When his parents died, he raised his younger brothers. Now they are just months from completing college – meaning Finn is just months from fulfilling his duty to his late parents – when his brothers both drop out and rush to Fool’s Gold, California to try out for a reality show. If Finn could physically force them to get back to school, he would. I love it when a take-charge man can’t take charge. What does he do, how does he react?
RJ: Why don't you tell me and the readers a little bit about Only Mine from the author's point of view?
SM: My job as a writer is to tighten the screws on my characters, to find ways to make their lives worse because, frankly, perfect lives are boring to read about. Because the Fool’s Gold books are lighthearted but emotional, I get to tighten those screws in both comical and serious ways, which is really fun for me as a writer. (And, I hope, fun for the reader because it provides a richer reading experience with both humor and emotion.)
In ONLY MINE, one way I made things worse for the beleaguered women of Fool’s Gold was to bring sleazy reality TV to town. They’re sick of being the butt of jokes as “the town with the man shortage,” and now their notoriety is going to be extended through a TV dating show. To mitigate the bad things that are sure to follow, the mayor asks psychologist Dakota Hendrix to serve as the town’s liaison with the show, interviewing potential contestants so she can reject the craziest of them and keep Fool’s Gold from looking foolish.
On a more serious note, Dakota is struggling with a secret that will change the course of her life, a secret so big that she hasn’t even shared it yet with her mother or her triplet sisters. Finn’s arrival in town just makes things more confusing for poor Dakota.
RJ: This release is the latest book in the Fool’s Gold series. What is this series' premise and how did the idea for it come about? Tell us all about the Fool’s Gold backdrop!
SM: Fool’s Gold, California is a quirky small town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The town is known for its festivals and parades, its warm, friendly people, its incredible scenery… and unfortunately, for its man shortage. The 2010 census revealed to the world that Fool’s Gold is a statistical anomaly, and no one is sure quite why.
Readers can learn more about Fool’s Gold by visiting www.foolsgoldca.com. Lots of great bonus content there, including some funny between-the-books stories, a free Fool’s Gold Family Recipes cookbook, a free knitting pattern, a free quilt pattern, and of course, excerpts of the Fool’s Gold books.
RJ: Did you pick up any interesting tid-bits while researching for the book and/or did you incorporate any unique elements in your story?
SM: Writing the Fool’s Gold books is a lot of fun for me because, since Fool’s Gold is fictional, I do “research” by creating new and interesting layers to the town. One of the things I did while writing this year’s books was to come up with a monthly calendar of the festivals in Fool’s Gold. (The town is known for its festivals and parades.) Pretty fun stuff. In Fool’s Gold, every festival has some sort of special twist. You can see the festival schedule here: http://foolsgoldca.susanmallery.com/festival.html
RJ: I love strong main characters, but having amazing secondary characters gives a book that extra “umph”. Give us the scoop on a notable secondary character in Only Mine. What’s their name, occupation, and a random fact about them?
SM: I’ll have to go with two characters because these two go together… kind of like bookends, actually. Sasha and Stephen Anderssen are the 20-year-old younger brothers of hero Finn Anderssen. They’re twins, of course, and just as gorgeous as their older brother, with dark hair and brilliant blue eyes. They’re young, handsome, and charming – so you know they’re going to be chosen as contestants on the reality show. Finn wants them to go back to college, but each young man has his own reason for wanting to get on the show. From early reviews, I can tell that readers are going to love Sasha and Stephen.
RJ: In a small paragraph, write the blurb to your life as it is-but exaggerated to how you ideally wish it were.
SM: Susan Mallery is the #1 New York Times bestselling author who has sold more books than JK Rowling and Nora Roberts combined!
RJ: What projects are you currently working on and what do the readers (and me!) have to look forward to next from you?
SM: ONLY MINE is the first of the Hendrix triplets’ romances. The other two triplets will fall in love in ONLY YOURS and ONLY HIS, which are due out in September and October. I think they’re two of the funniest stories I’ve ever written. There’s one particular two-word phrase that makes me chuckle every time I think of it. Can’t wait to hear how readers react.
As for what I’m currently working on… next year, three cowboy brothers will move to Fool’s Gold! Or should I say “move back?” They grew up there as the poorest kids in town. Now they’ve each made a fortune, and they’re back to take over the ranch where they grew up.
RJ: Picture this: Some major motion picture studio buys the film rights to Only Mine and want to make it into a movie. They bring you in as a consultant (since you wrote the book and everything-LOL). They ask you to come up with an ‘ideal’ cast list. Which actors would make that list?
SM: What a fun question! I decided to ask my fans at www.facebook.com/susanmallery for help with this one. (We like to play games like this all the time.) Someone suggested Sarah Michelle Gellar as Dakota (and therefore as Montana and Nevada, as well). Physically, she’s just about perfect, with her blonde hair and deep brown eyes, and she has a vulnerability to her that would work well, too. If we’re going to use her, though, we need to start filming immediately. She’s about 34 now, and the Hendrix triplets are 28.
Carrie Underwood was another fun suggestion to play Dakota. I think she’s adorable, and hey, then we could have Fool’s Gold, the Musical!
Several readers suggested Josh Duhamel as Finn. We’d need to dye his hair black, but I think he’d look pretty delicious as a brunette. Colin Egglesfield was a fun suggestion, too. Super sexy. Finn is 6’4” and a rugged pilot from Alaska, and Colin seems perfect for the role.

ONLY MINE by Susan Mallery
Susan Mallery's latest book, ONLY MINE, is available today... and I'm very honored to say that she dedicated it to me. I adore Susan. I started out as her fan, and now I'm both her fan and her friend.
In ONLY MINE, Dakota Hendrix is working behind the scenes on a TV dating show, making sure that the men on the show are up to the Fool's Gold standards. Finn Andersson doesn't want his younger brothers (handsome young twins) to be on the show, but to his dismay, Dakota doesn't obey his every command. (Don't you love a woman who stands up for herself?) You can read a free excerpt of ONLY MINE at FoolsGoldCA.com/bookstore.html.
ONLY YOURS and ONLY HIS, stories for Montana and Nevada Hendrix, Dakota's triplet sisters, will be out in the coming months.

Love Likely to Last a Lifetime for Brides over Age 25 - Susan Mallery
If you stop in here at Romance Author Buzz you'll see that I'm such a fan of Susan Mallery's. Her Marcelli series is going to be re-issued this year. Here's an article I found this am which I find quite interesting.
(PRWEB) January 23, Napa, CAThe National Study of Family Growth (NSFG) reports that brides age 25 and older are about twice as likely to enjoy long marriages than teenage brides. Teen couples who get engaged over Valentine’s Day might want to consider a long engagement to increase their odds of a successful marriage.
-- Many couples will get engaged on Valentine’s Day. On the whole, people wait longer to get married these days than ever before, and that may be a good thing. Women who get married at age 25 or older are twice as likely to remain married for at least ten years when compared with teenage brides, according to a report based on the National Study of Family Growth.
The Sparkling One by Susan Mallery“The heroines in my books tend to be in their late twenties,” says New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery. Known for her funny and sexy writing style, Mallery writes romance novels, books that focus on the developing love story between a man and a woman. “I believe women at this age have matured enough to know what they want in a husband, and are better at shrugging off the small stuff. Plus, they’ve been dinged up by life a little bit, and we’re all more interesting with scars.”
People who have never married have a higher risk of death at every age. Not a bad reason to get engaged this Valentine’s Day.
Is divorce inevitable for younger couples?
One of Mallery’s most popular series of books centers around the Marcellis, a family of California vintners. The first book, The Sparkling One, features a young couple whose engagement announcement sets the hero and heroine of the story at odds with each other. The sister of the bride-to-be is all for it, and even offers to plan the wedding. The father of the groom is adamantly opposed. So will the teenagers go through with the wedding, and will the marriage last?
“I don’t want to ruin the surprise,” says Mallery with a laugh. “I will tell you, though, that I positively believe that young marriages can last. That study says 40% of women who marry when they’re 18 or 19 years old divorce within the first ten years of marriage. That means that 60% don’t. That’s a lot of happy couples who are laughing with each other, loving each other, and finding a way to grow old together.”
In fact, they may grow older than their unmarried peers. A study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that people who have never married have a higher risk of death at every age. Not a bad reason to get engaged this Valentine's Day. The Sparkling One is being reissued this month, with the next two books in the series – The Sassy One and The Seductive One – coming in March and April.

Top 7 Steps to Regain Your Optimism - Susan Mallery
I found this article written by New York Times Best Selling author Susan Mallery on Top 7 Business.com. It's on Steps to Regain Your Optimism and a very inteeresting one.
Happiness is a choice, but it’s hard to choose happiness when the world around you is down in the dumps. The economy has affected our national mood, which affects each of us individually. Rather than decide to “be happy,” a goal so ambitious that it can feel impossible to achieve, make a resolution to take specific steps toward happiness. You need to retrain your brain to focus on the positive. By employing these seven strategies for just one month, you can regain your optimism.Mallery's Bio
1. Read books with a satisfying ending.
Books are nourishment for your soul. So why would you feed your soul with books that poison your outlook on life? Find books that promise to have a satisfying ending, one that will have you turning that last page with a feeling of pleasure, rather than a twinge of anxiety on the characters’ behalf. Romance novels and cozy mysteries are excellent for this. By the end of the story, you know the good guy will triumph, whether romantically or otherwise. When you read books that you know will end well, you’re sending a message to your psyche that the world is a just place. And just because you know the story will end well, doesn’t mean it will be predictable. Every story’s road to the happy ending is unique, so there are plenty of surprises to be had.
I particularly recommend romance novels with a strong dose of humor. They’re just plain fun. The characters in my books face a lot of very serious issues, but they do it with a wry sense of humor that readers respond to. When a character finds humor in tragedy, she encourages us to do the same.
2. Watch lighthearted TV shows and movies. Stay away from anything dark.
Remember when you were a child and your parents wouldn’t let you watch a certain TV show because it would give you nightmares? Well, you’re just as impressionable today, even if you don’t admit it. Everything you put into your brain impacts the way you view the world. If you must, record your favorite dark and depressing dramas, but don’t watch them during this month of cleansing.
3. Refocus your attention onto positive stories when watching and reading the news.
If you can, avoid the news and the stock market reports. If your job requires that you stay current on what’s happening in the world, then of course you must. In that case, make a concerted effort to skim one upbeat and entertaining story after you’ve finished with all the stories that make you feel down. Read about the coolest inventions of the year, or the latest trends in bath remodeling, or which celebrity had plastic surgery. Anything that will perk you up and keep you from worrying about the state of the world.
4. Rediscover something you loved as a child.
If you used to love making noodle necklaces, chances are good you’d enjoy beading today. If you thrived in gym class, you’d probably get a charge out of joining a local intramural sports league. Think back to what you loved in school. Were you fascinated in history class? Then make it a point to find out as much as you can about one moment in time. Play is a vital part of life, one that adults too often neglect. Think hard. Remember what you loved when you were a kid, and find a way to bring that into your life today.
5. purpose, visit a new place.
There is something invigorating about going somewhere new and different. I’m not talking necessarily about traveling somewhere exotic, although I’m all for that, too. This can be as simple as taking a walk along a path you’ve never seen, or going to a restaurant across town instead of your usual haunt. Try to go somewhere new at least once a week, and really pay attention to your surroundings.
6. Connect with friends
Life is busy, and it’s easy to allow months to go by without spending any quality time with your friends. Connect in a meaningful way with the friends who make you feel happy. (At least for this month, stay away from those friends who drain your energy.) At least once a week, make a date with a friend to have lunch together, or even a cup of coffee at your breakfast table.
7.Spend time each day listerning to music you love. Dance
If you’ve ever watched the Ellen DeGeneres show, you know that dancing has the ability to make people happy. Even bad dancing. Maybe especially bad dancing. For an instant boost of endorphins, crank up your favorite upbeat music and dance in your kitchen for five minutes. Do this for at least five minutes every day, and I guarantee you’ll have at least four minutes of happiness. (Sometimes it takes a minute for the endorphins to kick in.)

OCTOBER AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT - SUSAN MALLERY

Welcome Susan. My sheikh genre reading actually began with your Desert Rogue series. For me personally, this has been an exceptional and enjoyable reading journey.
Can you tell us about your October release, The Sheik and the Bought Bride, your final book in your The Desert Rogue series? What inspired you to write this particular story?

Susan: There are several elements I’ve wanted to put in a story for a long time. I’ve been saving them for the right time. I wanted to tell a story that was outrageous and exciting and sexy. For me, the sheikh books are all about the fantasy.
How does it feel to have the series ending and will you ever write another sheikh romance?
Susan: I’ve learned to never say never. Ideas show up when they’re least expected. But for now, I’m reaching the end of my sheikh book story telling.
How did The Desert Rogue series evolve?
Susan: I started with three books and really never thought I would do more. But the reader interest was huge and the mail started pouring in. So I kept writing them.
Of all your sheikh heroes, who was your favorite and why?
Susan: Oh, I don’t really have a favorite. Every story, every hero, is special.
I love how your heroines are always strong and stand up to these Princes of the desert. Your sense of humor shines through along with the sensual tension you create between your characters. Who was your favorite heroine to write?
Susan: Again, no favorites. I’ve enjoyed them all.
I believe I once read in one of your interviews that you created your own regions and countries. Was there a reason for that?
Susan: Yes. The real world of the Middle East is complex and difficult. There are religious differences and deadly conflicts. My books are about taking people away from the real world. So I created my own countries where my romantic stories can take place. There’s no religious issues, no war, no disagreements, except between the hero and heroine.
Have you read any book from the sheik genre?
Susan: I read them all the time and love them!
Why do you think the sheikh romances appeal to readers?
Susan: It’s the fantasy of the powerful, royal male brought to his knees. Most people think it’s the love of a good woman that changes him, but I disagree. It’s not being loved, but loving that makes him see the value of connecting emotionally as well as physically.
Is a sheikh the ultimate alpha male hero - “bad boy”? Or is it the appeal of the unknown, even the forbidden?
Susan: I think he’s more bad boy than forbidden.
Do you think current events ever influence one’s love — or hate — of sheik stories, or do you think reader’s are able to put all that aside and just enjoy the story?
Susan: Most are. I have had people say horrible things about these books and about me because they can’t see anything but reality. In truth, romance is all about different fantasies. That’s why we read them—to be swept away. Who better to do that than a sheikh.
Susan, I want to thank you for joining Romance Author Buzz and I look forward to reading The Skeik and the Bought Bride. I want to thank you for all of the joy The Desert Rogue series personally brought me.
Susan: My pleasure!
List of Books in the Desert Rogue Series:

What's New for Susan Mallery?

Welcome, Romance Lovers! NYT Best Selling Romance Author Susan Mallery Is Here Today!
Posted using ShareThis
The above a great article but what I loved most is that
Susan's working on a new series, the details as follows:
What’s next for Susan Mallery?
Have I mentioned that I love what I do? I’m working on a super-fun new series set in Fool’s Gold, California, a fabulously quaint town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Think tree-lined streets, historic homes, wineries, and a picturesque lake. The series will launch in May 2010 with FAKING PERFECT. Or so I hope. Actually the book will be out in May, but I’ve just heard Marketing wants us to rethink the title.
This is something new for me. Rather than writing a series with a specific beginning and end, I’m creating Fool’s Gold to be ongoing. So far, I’ve got five books planned, and who knows where we’ll go from there. Each book will be a standalone story, so readers don’t have to worry about reading them in order, but because the books share a setting, readers will have the opportunity to check back in with characters they’ve come to love.

On August 7th, Susan will also be on Blog Talk Radio, here are the details.

Susan Mallery has written wonderful series I've enjoyed throughout the years. Desert Rogues, Marcelli Sisters and now her Buchanan series which are set here in Seattle, WA. This nomination is for one of her Buchanan books. I've had the priviledge of personally getting to know Susan and we finally met this year at the Emerald City Writer's Conference. Bravo Susan, my friend!!

Susan Mallery and Marcelli Sister Series
MIA'S STORYSusan's Marcelli Princess comes out this month and it looks like it's going to be a great story. I began reading the series years ago, loved, loved it. I loved the fact that is was set in California, in wine country with this incredible Italian family full of some much love but also secrets. Mia is the youngest sibling and has lots of spunk. Series, The Marcelli Bride, The Sparkling One, The Sassy One and The Seductive One!
Susan is having a great contest on her site and I encourage you to take a look. Also a wonderful trailer on the book. It's located at http://www.susanmallery.com/index.html. She also has a fun poll and I won't tell you which one I checked, I think you would be shocked!
JUST IN FROM FALLEN ANGELS REVIEWS
The Marcelli Princess is an excellent ending to the Marcelli Family series. Fans of Susan Mallery, particularly her Marcelli’s, are bound not to be disappointed. The story is very well developed and flows smoothly. Nothing feels off kilter. The characters themselves are developed to a very high standard.
The Marcelli Princess is bound to bring a huge smile to your face, and it won’t be very far in before you find yourself gripped by the story. There is some sex and it is detailed, but it is all traditional and isn’t a dominant part of the book. Susan Mallery’s The Marcelli Princess is gripping, engaging and a joy to read!
