Happy United Nations Day 2011!!! Believe it or not, I had more than one UN themed romance comic cover up my sleeve! When you think about it though, the UN isn't such a strange setting for a romance story considering the organization's importance and prestige after the Second World War. While in college, I completed a month long seminar at the United Nations and believe me, the General Assembly and Security Council Chamber are quite glamorous!!! With all that mid-century design it would be hard not to fall in love at the UN!

Here's something a little different for you! Word puzzles from Charlton! These ingenious little one-pagers acted not only as filler content, but as advertising for the separate Charlton publications, Find-A-Word and Seek-a-Word. The House Ads of the Charlton Romance Comics!

Crazy fonts! Bright colors! Inventive one-liners! The house ads of the Charlton Romance Group had everything going for them to attract readers to the company's wide range of titles. Here is just a smattering of the very cool house ads that Charlton featured in their romance comics from 1967 through 1973. Notice the number of titles quickly expand from eight in 1967 to nine in 1968 and to eleven in 1970. Not only did the number of titles increase, but the names of titles changed over time as well -- for example, in the summer of 1971, Hollywood Romances was replaced by the For Lovers Only.
