The undisputed leaders of women’s fiction, Mills and Boon completed its centenary in publishing in 2008. Andrew J. Go, Director, Indian Operations, Harlequin Mills & Boon spoke to Leher Kala about the company’s plans for India

•Mills & Boon opened an office in Mumbai in February 2008. How is the Indian market for romantic fiction?

Our titles have been retailing here for over 50 years through book agents but in our global strategy, India is an important, emerging market. The brand is already hugely popular here. Wherever I go, people exclaim, and tell me they grew up with a sister or girlfriend hooked to our books. We have authors of Italian, French and Greek descent who appeal to nationalities all over the world, since the language of love is universal. Now we’re looking for Indian writers. We’ve launched the Passions Writing Contest for aspiring authors across the country. In keeping with our philosophy, all stories should be page turners, with happy endings.
