Meet Mary Matthews
Mary Matthews loved being an English major in college because it meant reading novels and talking about novels everyday. She also loves American history and is a descendant of an American Revolutionary War Patriot who played the Fife while he marched next to the Drummer during battles. She likes to say he played an instrumental role in the American Revolution. She also likes puns obviously. She lives in Southern California with her family.
Book Description:

Welcome Mary Matthews to Romance Author Buzz. Is there a back story to Waiting for Cary Grant?
A friend of mine invited me to a Spa Weekend. While I was watching a rerun of a Cary Grant movie in the Spa’s TV Room, I heard an elderly woman say, “This is why I never married. I was waiting for someone like Cary Grant.” And she sounded serious!
I thought it would be amusing if a heroine professed that she was "Waiting for Cary Grant" I also love classic movies and Cary Grant's character is asked in one classic film that's quoted in the book by the heroine: "Do you know what's wrong with you?" And when he asks, "What?, She responds, "Nothing"
I loved creating a hero that would spark her emergence from a cocoon of Cary Grant movies.
When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
I wrote a speech for my Dad’s birthday when I was 9 and it was well received by my family. I took my Dad’s compliments as a sign of talent.
Do you plot your stories or let your characters lead you?
I let my characters lead me.
Of all of your characters, do you have a favorite you identify with and why?
In Waiting for Cary Grant, I didn’t have a favorite character. I identified with the heroine’s love for Cary Grant movies though!
What are you currently working on?
I’m writing Emeralds, Diamonds and Amethysts. It’s a sequel to Splendid Summer.
Both books capture San Diego during the Roaring Twenties and feature romantic detectives Grace Wentworth and Jack Brewster.
In Splendid Summer, when Socialite Grace Wentworth's uncle mysteriously dies, Pinkerton Detective, Aviator, and Coronado Tent City resident Jack Brewster doesn't want a Doll's help with his investigation. But the difference between Grace Wentworth and a pit bull is a pit bull eventually lets go! They solve the mystery with help from Jack's magical white cat, Tatania. In Emeralds, Diamonds and Amethysts, Grace and Jack recover historically significant jewelry while their own relationship deepens.
If Oprah invited you onto her show to talk about Waiting for Cary Grant, what would the theme of the show be?
Women empowered by romantic fantasies find real life romantic heroes.
What is something you definitely want readers to know about you?
I write about heroines that triumph over adversity through wit and determination. I want readers to feel empowered while reading my books and walking vicariously in my heroine’s pumps.
What would you like your readers to remember the most about you and your writing?
I love the saying, “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” I want readers to remember my books as adventures filled with hope in a world where all things are possible.
What are you currently reading?
The Paris Wife.
