My Review:

This is a novella of Mayburn's Chosen by the Gods series, #1.5 in the series, if you will. A succubus, the Brazilian Carnival festival, voodoo, a sexy Chosen warrior of Creation, a former dancer turned seamstress and a god of Destruction's minions come together in this sensual paranormal romance.

Once again Mayburn has woven realistic characters and a irresistible story line set in Rio de Janeiro just prior to and during Carnival to engage the reader from the start. Full of sarcastic and wry humor, it had me chuckling from the first page. Bes, a War god of Creation and a patron of music, dancing, humor and sexuality as well as a protector of women, introduced in Blessed (the first book of the series), makes an appearance in this story as well. Being a novella, this is a stand alone story.

Carmella, the heroine, is plagued by self worth and self respect issues, has terrible nightmares and has no idea she is possessed by a succubus. She sees Sean and it is like he is the sun warming her - it has been forever since she has desired anyone.

Sean, the hero, is a DJ, musician and part of a music and dance entertainment troupe as well as a Chosen warrior of Creation. When he sees Carmella, even disguised in dreary clothing 3 sizes too big, he gets hard. He thinks she may be that "special soul that resonates with" his own.

Sean asks Carmella to teach him some traditional Brazilian dances and it turns into a very sensual display leaving him hard and her wet. Later, wow, that man does oral sex proud. My, my, my, the things that man does to her without physically touching her. And the shower scene...steamy! The man is so talented and I haven't even started to talk about his music yet. On a sexy scale, this is a 2 out of 4 (but only because for most of the story Carmella is a virgin).

Fans of L.A. Banks' Vampire Huntress Legend urban fantasy series might notice a vague plot similarity but Mayburn does it without blood sucking vampires and in true sensual paranormal romance fashion.

A great short story that can be read in one sitting, it is not to be missed by paranormal romance fans. I can't wait for the next full length story in this series.
