Dark Obsession Book Cover

Long ago Javier chose to walk away from the one person who mattered in his life. Now that he is free once again to roam the Earth, he becomes obsessed with making up for past mistakes. His mission is to gain Catherine's vote for the vampires on the Immortal Council, but when he sees her he realizes he wants much more. He wants her heart. When she disappears from the Council’s halls, he tracks her down, determined to make her remember the past -- and the love they once shared.

Catherine can’t let her passion for Javier rekindle -- no matter what the cost. Much has changed since he abandoned her so long ago. With the Immortal Council fragmented and her werewolf king abducted, Catherine has little patience for Javier's empty promises. Still, he is persistent, and she sees the value in having an ancient vampire for an ally. They strike a deal: she will submit to his every carnal desire if he will help find her king. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned, and their erotic interludes ignite the passionate anger of Catherine’s only fey ally. Now, all three of their lives are in jeopardy. To survive, Javier must build an intimate bond with the only woman who has ever rejected his love, and a man who’d like nothing more than to see him dead.

My Review:

This, the second in the Immortal Realms series, is filled with werewolves, vampires, fey, a demon from the netherworld, magick, an evil plot, forbidden desires and a reluctant romance. Rock has created a world of supernatural creatures with interesting abilities and needs as well as restrictions placed on them, and lies told to them, by an Immortal Council.

Catherine is a werewolf senator who still believes in the Council. She is also the forbidden ex-lover of Javier, a vampire, who left her without a word and broke her heart 200 years ago. When he resurfaces again after all this time, in a bid to "save her" and make her his Consort for eternity, he finds that she is not overjoyed to see him nor does she want his help. What she doesn't know is that she does need his help, that he still loves her and has been faithful to her since leaving.

When he finds her, she is on a mission with her "special friend with benefits" Talen, a fey, to rescue the werewolf King from the fey King. They stumble across an evil plot to free the demons from the netherworlds.

Stone describes this story as being "primarily a m/f romance, but contains m/f/m (between main characters), m/m (between secondary characters), flogging, exhibitionism, and capture and bondage." The m/m action is basically just oral and naked flogging as a form of true punishment. The Ménage à trios (m/f/m) is a pretty tame scene. The bondage is more magical than with real restraints. My, my, Javier is talented with is use of magick to increase the enjoyment of pleasure. On the sensual scale, I rate this a 3.5 out of 4.

I rate this book as a 3.5 out of 5 only because at only 232 pages there is just not enough room to delve in the whole world the story takes place in. Much of the story has already occurred (not in another book but in the background) or is alluded to through conversations. And there is much that could have been given a more thorough treatment. And I feel it ended a little abruptly - too much left to do for the main characters. It could easily be a 5 star if expanded to include the missing pieces.

I did enjoy the story and I think most urban fantasy and paranormal romance fans will as well. Now I want to go back and read the first in the series, Dark Deception.

Warning Spoiler Alert!!!
It does have a HEA ending of sorts.
