Review:

As the book opens you meet three of the major players: Fiona, Kingslea (Hugh), and Milton. Fiona is desperately trying to get away from a ship captain and get to her uncles house, when Hugh “rescues” her. Fiona’s dead fiancé is along for the ride tossing in some witty banter as the three make their away across town. Fiona quickly proves to be a very strong heroine. Strong and quick witted heroines are always a favorite of mine, but when placed in a historical setting they tend to rise to the top of my Favorite Heroine List.  After such a promising start to the story I was really looking forward to the rest of the book following suit. I am glad to say I wasn’t disappointed in the least.  Fiona and Milton’s banter with each other made sure the story was never boring. Even in the slower parts when normally a lot of backstory is being revealed there were plenty of light hearted comments flowing back and forth. By adding Hugh into the mix it was downright enjoyable to learn the backstory.

One of my favorite parts of the story featured Fiona, Milton, and Hugh thwarting Fiona’s cousin Piers during the first dinner party between Fiona and Hugh. Between Milton’s antic’s with Piers dinner and Fiona and Hugh attempting to flirt with each other while pretending they aren’t attracted to one another, it made for one very comical scene.
