The killer she can't escape . . .
The heartbreak she can't forget . . .
The one man who can stop them both.

When Samantha Fairchild witnesses a murder in the wine cellar of the restaurant where she works, the Harvard-bound law student becomes the next target of a professional assassin. Desperate for protection the authorities won't provide, Sam seeks help from Vivi Angelino, an investigative reporter who recruits her brother, Zach, to protect Samantha. A Special Forces vet with the scars to prove he's equally fearless and flawed, Zach takes the job, despite the fact that he and Sam once shared a lusty interlude that ended when he left for war and disappeared from her life. Now, as they crack a conspiracy that leads to Boston's darkest corners, Sam and Zach must face their fears, desires, and doubts, before a hired killer gets a second shot...

A first-rate whodunit debut for Ms. St. Claire’s new series, The Guardian Angelinos. It is heavier on the suspense than the romance, but you will not be disappointed. The story is well defined and engaging, making this a page turner that moves quickly. Although many family members are introduced, they are easy to differentiate from each other due to Ms. St. Claire’s excellent writing. Each character comes alive on the page.

The ground work for the family business is being laid in this first novel and you get to know the dynamics of those relationships. A peek at just a few of the family members… Vivi is Zach’s twin sister: She is the one who has the brainstorm of The Guardian Angelinos. Uncle Nino is the patriarch and stabilizing force of the family. Marc and Gabe (brothers) are cousins of Vivi and Zach: Marc, former FBI; Gabe, spook. Gabe’s brief appearance here will have readers clamoring for his own story .… and soon. I AM!

Three years ago Sammi Fairchild was left broken and sobbing. No words were exchanged then and none since. Now, she has to depend on him to keep her safe from a murderer.

“I won’t lie and tell you I knew I loved you when I got on that plane to Kuwait.”
Her eyes, even lit by the candles, showed he’d made a direct hit.
“But I think I did by the time I landed.”

Zach Angelino returned from war a scarred man; less than a man. Because of past mistakes, they continually doubt themselves, but together they learn to overcome these obstacles.

Now, one problem I did have was right after a harrowing incident for Sam and Zach. SPOILER ALERT! They are soaking wet, clothes clinging to them, they are cold, and Sam has lost her shoes and socks. They are taking refuge in a dilapidated barn. Sam’s feet are torn and bloody. Miraculously, Zach’s wallet, with condom still intact, survived the submersion. A romantic interlude ensues. I guess gratuitous sex was needed just then.
